Assessing the risk

New Joint British Societies' Guidelines on prevention of cardiovascular disease

The new Joint British Societies' Guidelines on the prevention of cardiovascular disease(CVD) in clinical practice are a collaboration between the British Cardiac Society, British Hypertension Society, Diabetes UK, HEART UK, Primary Care Cardiovascular Society and The Stroke Association.

The aim is to promote a consistent multi-disciplinary approach to the management of people with established CVD and those at high risk of developing it. The guidelines - to be disturbed to GPs across the UK - set tougher targets for the following, in people deemed to be at higher risk:

This includes people with thickened arteries, renal failure and for the first time, everyone with diabetes.

The Joint British Societies' Guidelines call for doctors to assess whether all patients aged over 40 would benefit from comprehensive tests for cardiovascular disease. They also stress that younger adults should be screened if they have a family history of early onset artery damage.

The guidelines strongly recommend that GPs take a more proactive approach to preventing CVD.

These tables (age versus total cholesterol level) were used by health care workers to identify the treatment threshold for cholesterol which conferred an estimated risk of coronary events of 3.0% per year. http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/40002293/
