Press Release: June 2008: National Heart Forum welcomes Government's new swimming initiative
06 June 2008
The National Heart Forum (NHF) welcomes the Government's investment to encourage more people to swim in municipal swimming pools. Commenting on the programme, NHF chief executive, Paul Lincoln, said:
"Promoting physical activity is one of the best buys in improving public health. To achieve mass participation it is vital to invest in initiatives that make it easier for people to take part in popular activities such as walking, cycling, dancing and swimming which appeal to all ages. Today's announcement is a good start as swimming appeals to people of all ages and abilities.
"To maximise the success of the programme, it will be important for the Government and Health and Local Authorities to ensure that those people in most need are encouraged to take part, and that the programme is properly evaluated and developed.
"We are particularly pleased that the Government is showing leadership as we have concerns about mixed health messages coming from commercial schemes which link sugary cereal brands with swimming."

Notes to editors
- A new £140 million fund to boost sport and fitness through free swimming for the over 60s was announced by the Government today as part of a drive to get two million people more active by the London 2012 Olympics. It will also be used as a challenge fund to encourage local authorities to offer free swimming to under 16's and to rejuvenate and maintain pools.
