NHF comments on the public health white paper

16 November 2004

Commenting on the government's public health white paper published today (16 November), Paul Lincoln chief executive of the National Heart Forum said:

"This white paper represents a significant step forward from previous government strategies on public health. It signals a reassuring shift in focus towards greater health promotion and protection by the health services. It also acknowledges - and starts to address - the role and responsibilities of the food and drink industry in tackling the obesity epidemic. We welcome the recognition given in this strategy to the legitimate role of government to create healthier environments and shift social norms in order to support individuals and protect the health of vulnerable groups, especially children."

On food marketing to children:

"Curbing the relentless and sophisticated marketing of foods high in salt, fat and sugar to children is the single, immediate step the government should take to protect children from unhealthy eating patterns. It is disappointing that we must spend the next three years watching the inevitable failure of voluntary controls before the government is willing to introduce the necessary statutory legislation."

On smoking:

"The proposals for smoking restrictions in workplaces and enclosed public places are a tremendous step forward for public health. We welcome the ban, but are seriously concerned that the anomalous exemption of some pubs and clubs will leave bar staff working in those premises unprotected from the health hazards of second hand smoke. We urge the government to strengthen the restrictions to achieve a comprehensive ban."

On physical activity:

"The range of proposals to encourage more people to be more physically active is extremely welcome. At the same time as raising public demand, we need to see this matched with action and investment across government  - delivered through schools and local authorities  - to provide the opportunities and facilities for active travel, sport and leisure so that people can make real, sustainable changes in their daily lives."
